GIFTED ENTREPRENEUR’S A-LIST
Every week we will feature entrepreneurs on our ‘A-LIST’ – Angels and Archangels making the world a better place. We recently had the chance to speak with David Heath from Bombas. When we first met David, Bombas was the #1 most popular crowdfunding project on Indiegogo and has raised over $140,000 of their $15,000 goal.
NAME: David Heath
FAVOURITE QUOTE: “If you’re not weird, you’re weird” – unknown
WHAT DO YOU DO?
Think about this: Socks are the #1 most requested clothing item in homeless shelters. Crazy but true. And this: Athletic shoes have advanced tremendously in the last 20 years. Socks still look and feel exactly the same.
We brought these two ideas together to create Bombas, a new kind of athletic-leisure sock that have to be felt to be believed. Bombas not only look better and performs better, but we also donate a pair of socks to someone in need for every pair purchased.
WHY DO YOU DO?
I do what I do because I know nothing else. I have always been intrigued by things and processes I felt were broken or inefficient. That intrigue is usually followed by a desire to think about ways to fix it or make it better some how.
I like to challenge the status quo and revel in controlled disruption in the hopes that the outcome will inspire at least one person to see things from a different perspective.
HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR GIFT?
My gift is my ability to immerse myself in something to the point that it becomes a part of me. Speak to me about anything I’m passionate about and there’s a pretty good chance you’ll want to be a part of it.
It’s not something I consciously do either; I honestly can’t control it because I, myself, believe every word that comes out of my mouth. That honesty with myself is conveyed to others, which makes it easy for them to become believers as well.
Simply put, I’m an evangelist.
HOW DO YOU GIFT IT FORWARD?
Personally, I’d like to believe that I make others feel comfortable to be themselves, or find themselves, and inspire them to do whatever it is that makes them the happiest, and to ignore all the naysayers.
As far as Bombas is concerned, we were inspired when we saw this quote: “Through our work with those in need, we know that socks are the most requested clothing items in homeless shelters” – Major George Hood, Chief Communications Officer, The Salvation Army
That really stuck with us. We started to think: If TOMS donates a pair of shoes for every pair purchased… and Warby Parker donates a pair of eyeglasses… then why couldn’t Bombas donate a pair of socks?
Well we can, and we will. For every pair of socks purchased we will donate a pair to someone in need.
HOW DID YOU START ON YOUR GIFTED JOURNEY?
We were inspired when we saw this quote mentioned above. Since our launch just a short month ago, we have donated over 25,000 pairs of socks. To think that in just one month we have been able to affect over 25,000 lives is beyond amazing to me. That number will always mean more to me than the revenue.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THE 21 YEAR OLD VERSION OF YOURSELF?
Be yourself and if you’re ever in doubt, follow your gut.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE THINKING OF BECOMING A GIFTED ENTREPRENEUR?
Get as close to the cause as possible. Volunteer to help, and help often. Being involved with an issue first hand is the only way to ignite that fire.
WHO ARE THE ARCHANGELS IN YOUR LIFE?
There are an incredible amount of people who mentor and/or inspire me, but the two that I truly owe everything to are my mom and dad. My mom is the definition of selflessness and her desire to give to others knows no boundaries. She showed first hand that giving can be more rewarding than receiving.
My dad is one of the most ethically sound and passionate entrepreneurs I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. I was fortunate to grow up along side the growth of his own company and I owe a lot of what I know about being an ethical and honest business person to him. He also instilled in me the power of great customer service.
