Giving Tuesday

Why I’d Rather Donate Money To Entrepreneurs (And NOT To Charity)

Today is #GivingTuesday.

In response to the consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday was created to inspire charitable giving.

I think this is incredible, and I’m all for being charitable.

However, instead of donating to charities, I’d rather donate to entrepreneurs.

HERE’S WHY…

If I give a dollar to a charity, they will use that dollar to do good things. Then, they’ll ask for another dollar to do more good.

If I give a dollar to a purpose-driven, big-hearted entrepreneur, if I give them wisdom, and connect them with other big-hearted entrepreneurs for mentorship and support – they will grow their business. They will make an even bigger impact to do good things, and they will do it over and over.

The dollar could be used once or infinitely.

As the saying goes, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”.

I believe that entrepreneurs who make a fortune by making a significant difference can create more sustainable, positive, and exponential change than non-profits and charities can.

I also know that I can’t change the world alone. But, if I support a community of entrepreneurs that also want to change the world, then TOGETHER we can make an exponential difference.

HOW I’M GIFTING FORWARD $120,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS

On January 29 – 30 I’m hosting the next annual Archangel Academy mastermind event in Los Angeles. We invited 100 big-hearted, successful entrepreneurs, who are making the world a better place, to spend two days sharing wisdom, connecting, and helping each other grow.

This year’s alumni include Danielle LaPorte, JJ Virgin, Andrew Hewitt, Renee Airya, Kristi Frank, Dr. Jeff Spencer, Steve Sims, Neil Moore, Sean Gallagher, Jim Sheils, Marissa Brassfield, Floyd Marinescu, Jesse Elder, Steve Daar, James Tonn, Shannon Graham, Shari Alexander, Joe Foley, Tahani Aburaneh, Jeremy Ellens, Nicholas Kusmich, Billy Anderson, Theresa Laurico, Giovanni Marsico, and many more.

We then take a portion of the profits and offer 25 additional spots as full scholarships ($4800 each) to up and coming entrepreneurs who earn less than $500,000 per year. These promising entrepreneurs have the ability to change the world and would benefit greatly from being mentored by the group.

Think of it like the TOMS Shoes model for entrepreneurial events. The results, so far, have been amazing and I’m expecting this year to be even better.

WHY WE OFFER SCHOLARSHIPS

I owe a lot of my success to my time working at Strategic Coach, 14 years ago.

I had the privilege of sitting in on workshops with some of the most successful entrepreneurs on the planet. I learned more about entrepreneurship than I could have learned at any business school.

When I left in 2005, I wanted to find a way to recreate my experience for other big-hearted, growing entrepreneurs who could change the world and would benefit from sitting in a room with a group of like-hearted mentors.

We’ve had hundreds of amazing entrepreneurs receive scholarships to our events, and we are excited to discover our next 25 success stories.

In fact, we’re thrilled to announce the first two scholarship recipients for Archangel Academy 2015 – Matt Murrie and Justin Faerman.
